1978 PHS State Soccer Champs

Well, our 2nd Annual Get-Together was well attended and all present seemed to have a great time! I know that I certainly did! There was plenty of food and the food was great if I do say so myself. We played some soccer of course (I even tried to play). Most enjoyable, however, was meeting everyone’s family, seeing each other and catching up on the years that have passed and reminiscing about PHS Soccer.

Those of you who did not attend were really missed and hopefully you will all be able to make it next year. So, mark your calendars now: our annual get-together will always be the first Saturday in August. That makes our third annual get-together on Saturday, August 6, 2011.

In attendance this year from the state championship team were:

We really appreciated you all coming out to help us celebrate and reminisce and we sincerely hope that in future years more players from other teams at PHS will join us in celebrating! You are all always welcome!!

All who were present said they would be back next year. Hopefully attendance will continue to grow with each passing year.

Anyone who took pictures at the get-together and would like them included on our website should email them to me and I’ll see that they are posted to our photo section.

Lastly, we did run a little short on funds for the get-together and the annual fee for website hosting is due in October. I’d also like to give my son something for the time (countless hours) and effort that he has put into this site. In addition to the time he has donated to make this site first-rate (just like that 1978 team) he donated the web hosting fees for the first year of our site’s existence and he continues to maintain our site and keep it updated. So, any and all donations would be appreciated. You can use the donate button on the Webmaster tab of the site or mail me a check. Any monies left over will help to defray the cost of next years get-together. Of course, a big thanks to those of you who have already made a donation!

From May 23rd to May 25th Mark Goulart and the team that we all played against at our reunion weekend were in Danvers Massachusetts at the 2009 Danvers Invitational Tournament. Coach O’Hara’s grandson Patrick played sweeper.

The game was tied 0-0 after regulation play and after 2 5-minute overtimes the game remained a 0-0 tie. The team won with penalty kicks making the final score 1-0 Portsmouth Pirates.

Congratulations to “Coach Mark” and to Patrick on becoming the 2009 Danvers Invitational Champions! Mark, a 1978 championship player, is now a 2009 championship coach.

We have a contact page on the site where I’d like to list email contacts for those of you who don’t mind sharing that information. If you want your email address listed on the contact page please let me know and I’ll see that you’re added. This will be a great way for us to keep in touch with each other!

On the Webmaster Page of the site there is a “Donate” button which you can use to make donations via PayPal or credit card. Donations will be used to attempt to compensate my son for his time and effort in creating and maintaining this site. Donations will also help defray the cost of hosting our site on my son’s server. He has graciously offered to host the site at his own expense but I’d like to help defray those costs if possible.

Each year any monies left over will be used to help pay for the cost of our annual get-together.

I would like to thank Bob Rutkiewicz for getting players ready for the varsity team. He did a great job developing our young players. Also, I’d like to thank him for his many other contributions to our success.

I would like to thank John Blaess for working with our keepers and turning two good keepers into two great keepers. This certainly contributed greatly to our success!

And last, but certainly not least, thanks to you all for making our team a family and for making our reunion a great success. I know we’re all looking forward to getting together again!
